Lake Balaton's trees are dying: A third of them will die in 10 years! 🌳😱
A serious threat to green spaces: Within ten years, up to every third tree in Budapest may die due to the consequences of climate change - warned Péter Dezsenyi, the director general of Főkert Nonprofit Zrt. This alarming trend is not only limited to the capital, but may affect public areas throughout the country, and the situation may be even worse in southern regions, such as Szeged. 🌳
The root of the problem lies in the combined effects: increasingly frequent droughts, extreme temperature fluctuations and the aging of trees together increase the risk of death. According to the data of the Main Garden, a significant part of the trees in Budapest are already old, so they are particularly vulnerable to global warming. "Climate change accelerates the spread of diseases, such as fungal infections or pest attacks," emphasized the Director General. For example, poplars and sycamores are already losing their leaves en masse due to early stress. 🌡️
In a national context, this is particularly worrying in the Balaton basin, where the southern, drier climate paints similar or worse prospects. In Szeged, according to experts, a loss of 40-50 percent is possible. Urban trees are vital for mitigating heat islands, cleaning the air and preserving biodiversity – their loss can reduce quality of life. As a solution, experts recommend intensive planting programs, the introduction of drought-tolerant species and the construction of irrigation systems.
According to Főkert's plans, thousands of new trees must be planted in Budapest every year to make up for the loss, but this requires state and local government cooperation. The effects of climate change are thus not just an abstract threat, but require immediate action.
