Balaton lélegzik: Riasztás vége! ☀️
To the great relief of the residents and winter visitors of the settlements on the Lake Balaton, HungaroMet has canceled the meteorological alert due to the danger of blowing snow for the counties of Zala, Veszprém and Somogy. This affects the entire Balaton basin, so traffic on the coastal roads from Siófok to Keszthely, from Balatonfüred to Fonyód becomes safer. ❄️
According to the Disaster Management Institute, the previous yellow alert, which indicated blowing snow due to strong winds, no longer needs to be maintained, as the weather front has moved away. The situation was threatened both on the northern and southern shores of Lake Balaton: the stormy wind combined with the waves whipped up on the lake's open water surface could have made it difficult for the harbors to work and the use of the coastal walkways.
On a local level, this is especially good news for Balaton fishermen, who can work more calmly in the current milder weather, as well as for holiday home owners who are planning winter maintenance. As a result of the canceled alert, the risk of slipping along highways 71 and 7 as well as on the smaller access roads to the coast is significantly reduced, so weekend hikers can set off more confidently. In the Balaton area, winter tourism – for example, visitors to ice rinks or thermal spas – is also not threatened by obstacles, which invigorates the region's economy. 😌
The attentiveness of the meteorological service has been proven once again, but the people of Balaton remain cautious: snow chains and slower driving on cool mornings are recommended. Life around the lake can thus return to normal.
