Balaton storm warning: Watch out! ⚠️

BalatonLife

HungaroMet issued a yellow alert for the Balaton region for Wednesday 25 March, warning of strong north-westerly winds and stormy weather. Coastal towns such as Siófok, Balatonfüred or Keszthely are most affected, where gusts may reach 60–70 km/h, causing significant wave action on the lake. 🌪️

The warning runs from morning to evening and brings a typical Balaton spring weather front. Strong winds whip up lake water; waves of 1–1.5 metres may form, endangering early sailing and boats resting in harbours. For locals, using coastal cycle paths and promenades is risky; wind may damage saplings or smaller structures.

Tourism may feel it too: spring weekend visitors should be careful on windy shores where sand clouds or fallen branches may hinder plans. In traffic, especially on route 71 or the cycle path, expect reduced visibility from stirred dust and debris. Balaton shipping companies have already limited services to avoid accidents.

The alert urges region residents and visitors to stay indoors, secure outdoor items and follow fresh forecasts. Lakeside municipalities stand ready; civilians should watch storm sirens. So spring preparation around the lake does not turn sour.
