The community of Zalavár on Lake Balaton's southern shore mourns with the region: 22-year-old police officer Bálint Zsolt Zalavári died on duty early Thursday near Veszprém outskirts after a driver struck him while on patrol. 😢 The young colleague came from Zalavár, near Balatonbereny, where family and friends now bid farewell in shock.

The tragedy occurred near Veszprém, just a few dozen kilometres from the Balaton, where Zalavári often served. Police said during patrol in the early hours he was hit on the road and suffered injuries so severe he died at the scene. The driver was placed in preliminary detention; circumstances are under investigation. 🚔

In the Balaton region this loss is especially painful: holidaymakers and locals alike rely on police presence for lakeside safety, especially as beach season approaches. In the small village of Zalavár, where tourism enlivens daily life, the young officer was a role model – his service helped guests relax peacefully from Balatonbereny to Siófok. The community honours him with candles and remembrance, while the question arises: how will road safety now be ensured on Balaton routes?

The tragedy highlights risks faced by regional officers protecting holidaymakers and locals in the Balaton bustle. His family, colleagues and lakeside residents share the grief.
