Drama at Lake Balaton: Swedish victory on the Tour de Hongrie! 🚴
The final stage of this year's Tour de Hongrie again put the Balaton shore in the spotlight: riders left Balatonalmádi towards Veszprém, so locals and holidaymakers could experience the drama up close. The stage was not only sport but a regional celebration where communities proudly welcomed the international field.
Sweden's Albin Söderqvist led the general classification but crashed a few kilometres before the Veszprém finish. Rivals seized the moment, yet he caught them and won the race. Erik Fetter became king of the mountains while Hungary's best, Attila Valter, finished ninth overall. A large crowd gathered early around the Balatonalmádi start, many cheering from the lakeside promenade or nearby hills 🚴♂️.
The race also boosted Balaton tourism: it offered holidaymakers a special programme and local hospitality reported extra weekend traffic. Veszprém and surrounding lakeside towns benefited both sportingly and for the tourist season.
