Orange alert on the southern shore of Lake Balaton! ⚠️
People living on the southern shore of Lake Balaton and winter visitors are also affected by the second-degree (orange) meteorological alert issued by HungaroMet for the entire area of Somogy county due to blowing snow. ❄️ On the roads covered with fresh snow in the Balaton-side settlements, such as Siófok, Balatonszárszó, Balatonlelle or Fonyód, the stormy wind can even raise high snow banks, which makes it difficult to drive on highway 7 and lower-order roads along the coast. 🌬️
The alert warns that the stormy north-west wind can cause blowing snow, especially in open, windy areas, such as along the reeds of Balaton or in the hilly area of Somogy. This not only endangers the daily traffic of local residents, but also those who come to Lake Balaton in winter: skaters on the ice rinks, fishermen or those walking along the coast need to be extra careful. Ships anchored in harbors and cars parked near beaches can also suffer from snow accumulation.
In the Balaton region, this phenomenon is particularly risky due to the lakeside infrastructure: blockages can quickly form around the narrow roads and bridges, which can cause delays between Siófok and Kaposvár. Disaster prevention recommends avoiding unnecessary trips, using winter tires and monitoring the latest news. If HungaroMet withdraws or modifies the alert, we will inform our readers immediately.
