🟠 Orange alert in Zala: storm threatens the Balaton! ⚡

BalatonLife

Strong wind alert hits Lake Balaton's western and southern shores: a second-level orange meteorological warning was issued for Zala county. 🌪️ In the area from Keszthely Bay to Fonyód, the fiercest gusts may reach or exceed 90 km/h – serious danger for lakeside residents, holiday guests and water sports enthusiasts alike.

According to HungaroMet, stormy weather peaks on Thursday, so authorities urge heightened readiness around Keszthely, Gyenesdiás, Vonyarcvashegy and Balatonberény. Huge waves may form on Balaton water, halting boating; sailing and windsurfing may face bans. Lifeguard services are deploying extra staff on beaches to prevent accidents.

The greatest risk for locals is falling trees and flying loose objects – last year similar gales cancelled several Balaton festivals; now weather may overshadow the post-beach-opening season start. We advise tourists: avoid coastal walks, keep distance from water and watch ferry departures on the Keszthely–Balatonfüred line where delays are expected. ⚠️ Caution in traffic too: strong crosswinds on route 71 and the Balaton cycle path may hinder progress.

See affected districts – including Keszthely and Nagykanizsa – on the real-time map here. If HungaroMet withdraws or modifies the warning, we will update immediately. Stay safe around the Balaton!
