Storm sweeps across Lake Balaton on Sunday 🌩️

Special attention should be paid to the weekend on the southwestern shore of Lake Balaton, as the cold front arriving on Sunday may bring heavy thunderstorms and stormy winds to the area. In the settlements around the lake, such as Keszthely, Hévíz or Balatonmáriafürdő, locals and holidaymakers alike can expect repeated showers and thunderstorms. The undulating frontal system brings strengthening cumulus clouds during the day and cells arriving from the northwest. Locally 25–35 millimeters of precipitation, a few centimeters of hail and 80–90 km/h wind gusts may also occur above Lake Balaton and in the southwestern areas. HungaroMet has issued an orange warning for the southwestern part of the country, which directly affects the lake basin as well. Beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts should take shelter in covered areas during the afternoon hours. Sailors and kayakers are particularly at risk, as sudden stormy winds can easily whip up the water. On the promenade and in campsites, securing tents and closing umbrellas is recommended. By the evening hours, the thunderstorms will move south, but temperatures will remain moderate at the beginning of the week. However, from mid-week, the heatwave will hit, so Balaton-side holidaymakers will soon be seeking relief from the heat in the cool waters of the lake again. ⛈️
