Storms Soak Balaton – What to Expect? 🌩️
The excitement of Tuesday afternoon was not absent in the Balaton region either: thunderstorms broke out primarily northwest, north, and northeast of the lake, mostly arriving with cloudbursts. As a result, a second-degree storm warning came into effect at the Hungarian sea, and the flashing of the storm warning lights clearly signaled to bathers that it was worth being cautious.
The storms also made their presence felt near Balaton-side settlements such as Balatonfüred, Tihany, and Balatonalmádi. Although it didn't rain heavily everywhere along the immediate shoreline, the sight of distant precipitation bands was still impressive alongside the turquoise water surface. For locals and holidaymakers, this rapid weather change meant that instead of beachgoing, they sought shelter in covered places or wine cellars.
In the Bakony and the surrounding hilly areas, the temperature dropped below 20 degrees after the thunderstorms, making the Balaton evenings noticeably cooler as well. The new precipitation field arriving from the west, northwest will gradually shift eastward during the night hours, primarily in the form of showers and embedded thunderstorms. ⛈️
This fluctuating weather is also a warning sign from a tourism perspective: it is important for holidaymakers to always follow the latest storm warnings, especially on the northern shore of the lake. The sudden cooling and heavy rains may temporarily dampen the desire for beachgoing, but they also bring fresh air and spectacular skies to the settlements around Balaton.
