Why Did the Police Detain the Head of Fonyód City Management?

The residents and vacationers on the southern shore of Lake Balaton were alarmed by the proceedings against the managing director of Fonyód’s city management company. The police detained the head of Fonyódi Városfejlesztési és Városüzemeltetési Nonprofit Kft. and a relative on suspicion of illegal invoicing – this news is now casting a shadow over daily life in the lakeside town as well.

Investigators had already removed a large quantity of documents from the company’s headquarters last summer, but at the time it was not yet clear exactly who the proceedings were targeting. An audit committee set up by opposition councillors has been examining payments from the 2019–2024 period since last year, of which allegedly 150–300 million forints were found to be questionable. However, the majority of the committee rejected the report in a closed session, so the details remain hidden from the public for the time being.

Transparency in city management is a particularly sensitive issue for any Lake Balaton municipality, as the maintenance of beaches, parks and public spaces directly affects the success of the summer season. The news of suspicious payments therefore worries Fonyód residents not only because of the fate of local tax forints, but also because the use of funds earmarked for tourism may be called into question. 🏖️

Until the police investigation is concluded, it is difficult to predict the consequences for the coming season, yet locals rightly expect every doubt concerning public funds on the Lake Balaton shore to be clarified as soon as possible.
