Storm Snaps Trees in Alsópáhok at Lake Balaton 🌪️
The Wednesday downburst caused serious damage in settlements around Keszthely, including Alsópáhok, hitting with frightening force for both lakeside vacationers and locals at Lake Balaton. The gusty winds and sudden downpour broke or uprooted several trees in the settlement within minutes.
A short but intense storm developed near Alsópáhok in the Keszthely district. The downburst quickly filled the ditches with water, while hurricane-force gusts swept through the area. 20 mm of rain fell in nearby Hévíz and 21 mm in Csombárd in a short time, showing how locally strong the cell was.
Such severe summer storms are particularly common in the western basin of Lake Balaton, and although they usually pass quickly, they cause significant inconvenience to tourists and lakeside service providers alike. Fallen trees can affect not only streets but also cycle paths and green areas, leading to serious logistical difficulties during the peak season.
The downburst – this downward, extremely strong air current – lasts only a few minutes, yet it can cause serious damage. The most important task for locals now is to remove tree trunks and branches posing hazards from public areas as quickly as possible. 🌧️
