Swamp turtle surprises the guesthouse in Balatonmáriafürdő 🐢

A special visitor appeared in the garden of one of the popular catering venues on the southern shore of Lake Balaton in Balatonmáriafürdő: a swamp turtle 🐢 chose the grounds of the Port restaurant & guesthouse as a nesting site. The surprising yet all the more joyful event immediately set local conservationists in motion.

The guesthouse staff, in coordination with the Balaton Uplands National Park Directorate, immediately fenced off the designated area so the turtle could leave its offspring undisturbed. In the restaurant’s Facebook post, they asked passers-by to pay attention to the marked section, as a small but all the more valuable Balaton story is unfolding nearby.

The swamp turtle is Hungary’s only native turtle species, with a conservation value reaching 50,000 forints. Its occurrence around Lake Balaton is always joyful news, as the protection of the species is closely linked to the preservation of the lakeside habitats. For locals and holidaymakers alike, this moment shows that Lake Balaton is not only about swimming and festivals, but also a living, protected natural environment.

The current case is a great example of how local caterers and nature conservation authorities can work together. Balaton-side communities are increasingly encountering similar phenomena, which also indicates that conscious protection bears fruit in the long term. It is therefore worth walking along the shore with open eyes – you never know when another Balaton “neighbour” might appear. 🌿
