Will the somlói galuska ice cream be a Balaton hit? 🍦
The Veszprém ice cream factory, which supplies the beaches and catering establishments on the northern shore of Lake Balaton with fresh products during the peak summer season, has undergone significant changes since its separation from the Unilever giant. According to Péter Konecsni, the Hungarian head of The Magnum Ice Cream Company (TMICC), independent operation has allowed the company to focus exclusively on the ice cream category, thus directing its innovation resources entirely towards this – which also directly affects Balaton tourism.
Guests in Balaton-side settlements such as Balatonfüred, Tihany or Keszthely are seeking increasingly varied flavours in the heat. Factory investments and the logistics background now serve this goal specifically, responding more quickly to market demands. The rapid catch-up after the separation is already visible in sales figures, meaning more stable supply for shops and ice cream parlours around the lake.
The acceleration of innovation is particularly noticeable during the summer months. While developing a new flavour previously took longer, variations inspired by local ingredients – such as fruits from the Somló region or traditional desserts like the somlói galuska flavoured stick ice cream – can now appear sooner in the Balaton offering. Customer tastes change rapidly, so continuous renewal is key to the success of the beach season.
Demand for vegan alternatives is also growing around Lake Balaton, where more and more people are looking for health-conscious or plant-based options for outdoor activities. Péter Konecsni emphasised that the flexibility gained as an independent company helps these products reach the region’s stores faster as well. This not only makes everyday consumption easier for locals but also enriches the experience of holidaymakers by the lakeside. 🍦
In the coming period, therefore, it will be worth watching what new flavours the Veszprém factory’s products will surprise the Balaton beaches with.
