Why Have the Non-Biting Midges Disappeared from Around Lake Balaton?

This year at Lake Balaton, there is no need to expect a prolonged non-biting midge invasion, so residents of the lakeside settlements and holidaymakers can enjoy a more peaceful summer. According to the latest data from the HUN-REN Balatoni Limnological Research Institute, approximately one-third of the Chironomus balatonicus larval population has already swarmed, and due to the previous windy weather, no massive flying populations have formed.

The density of larvae still in the water and ready to swarm is estimated at only 200–340 individuals per square meter. This number is no longer sufficient to cause disturbing, long-lasting swarms in the coastal settlements – from Siófok to Keszthely. Therefore, in the next month, only sporadic, short-duration flights can be expected across the entire Lake Balaton area.

According to the researchers, the distribution of larvae in the lake is unusually even, while the total non-biting midge biomass has returned to the long-term, low average value. This is particularly good news for those preparing for the beach season 🏖️, as the insects will not disturb water-side programs and tourism. Both locals and guests can breathe a sigh of relief. 🌊
