Fonyód Scandal: Former Mayor in Custody, Balaton Fraud?

Fonyód, the popular resort on the southern shore of Lake Balaton, its former Fidesz mayor József Hidvégi was taken into custody for 72 hours. Police detained the politician on suspicion of particularly large-scale economic fraud linked to the operation of the municipal Fonyódi Városfejlesztési és Városüzemeltetési Nonprofit Kft. 🌊.

The investigation began last year following several reports and primarily examines the 2019–2024 period. Authorities believe that payments worth 150–300 million forints may be questionable, some of which went to persons connected to the former mayor and the managing director in exchange for various services. The company's former managing director and a relative were already arrested earlier, and money laundering suspicions have also arisen. Hidvégi’s son was questioned as a suspect but was later released.

The case is of particular local significance: the nonprofit Kft.’s responsibilities include maintaining public spaces, parks and certain tourist facilities. Any irregularities could directly affect the condition of beaches, urban infrastructure and ultimately the experience of Balaton holidaymakers. The municipal investigative committee’s report was previously rejected by the governing party majority, so details have not yet been made public.

The police procedure continues; in the coming days it will be decided whether the prosecutor’s office will request Hidvégi’s pre-trial detention. Developments will certainly continue to be closely monitored by settlements on the southern shore. ⚖️
