Shock at Lake Balaton: County newspapers become weeklies 😲
The Mediaworks decision that from August 1 the Veszprém megyei Napló and the Somogy Megyei Hírlap will also appear as weeklies directly affects the daily information habits of the settlements along the Balaton shore. Residents and holiday-home owners on the northern and southern shores will therefore receive fresh local news about events around the lake less frequently from now on.
According to the Mediaworks statement, the change shifts the emphasis toward longer reports, interviews and analyses. For readers around Lake Balaton this means that instead of traffic changes in Siófok or Balatonfüred, beach developments and tourist programs, they will mainly read background material at weekends.
The move is linked to Mediaworks’ 14-billion loss last year and the absence of state advertising. Staff reductions at the Veszprém and Somogy county editorial offices mean fewer journalists remain to follow lakeside events, which may also affect the local news flow during the summer season.
At the same time, the weekly format offers the opportunity to present Balaton tourism, hospitality venues and community issues in greater depth. Locals may thus gain deeper insight into investments and environmental issues affecting the region 📰🌊.
