Balaton's cooling secret: unexpected turn on the lake 🌬️
The water of Lake Balaton has thoroughly refreshed in the past few days, after several cold fronts arrived in the region. On the Hungarian sea's coastal settlements, from Keszthely to Siófok, bathers can now enjoy a pleasantly cooling experience instead of encountering the previous thermal water-like temperature.
The Wednesday stormy front and today's cold front have strongly mixed the lake's water. In the near-surface layers, a temperature drop of several degrees was measured, so the previously over 30 degrees values – nearly 33 degrees at Keszthely – quickly dropped back. According to the data of the Balaton Limnological Research Institute, the warm water layer had penetrated deeper earlier, but the winds have now thoroughly stirred everything up.
The change is noticeable on both the southern shore and the northern side: for locals and holidaymakers, swimming has become an attractive alternative again after the heat. Today's front did not bring precipitation, but the wind is still stirring the water columns, so the cooling continues.
As the weekend approaches, the wind will moderate, and due to the sunshine, the surface will start to warm slightly again. There is no reason for concern – Lake Balaton has not become ice-cold, it has merely returned to the usual, pleasant summer mode, which is particularly welcome from the perspective of tourism in the settlements around the lake. 🌊
