What is an alligator snapping turtle doing on the northern shore of Lake Balaton? 🐢

BalatonLife

An alligator snapping turtle has appeared on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, once again serving as a warning for residents and holidaymakers in the area. The presence of this non-native species at the popular resort could pose a serious safety risk, especially for anglers and beachgoers.

According to Teknős Park Balatonföldvár, similar incidents occur almost every summer around the lake. This suggests that some people continue to release these exotic animals into the wild. However, with the capture of the current specimen, there is one less dangerous turtle in the waters of Lake Balaton.

Due to its strong bite, the alligator snapping turtle should not be handled by hand – experts warn. This is especially important for locals, as many people fish or swim in the shallower areas during the summer season. ⚠️

Interestingly, another specimen was caught in a baitfish net between Balatonőszöd and Balatonszárszó already in July this year. These cases clearly show that the problem is not limited to individual settlements but affects the entire Balaton region. Conscious pet ownership and responsible adoption are therefore crucial for protecting the lake’s ecosystem. 🐢
