Fire near Lake Balaton: Marcali waste storage facility ablaze 🔥

A serious fire is occurring in the Marcali area near the southern shore of Lake Balaton, which may indirectly affect the settlements around the lake and holidaymakers as well. A waste storage facility of about five thousand square meters has caught fire next to road 6805, where the flames have also reached the rubber insulation, so a dense smoke cloud may rise into the air.

Under the direction of the Somogy County disaster management operational service, several units arrived at the scene: in addition to the Marcali professional firefighters, their colleagues from Keszthely, Zalakaros, Nagykanizsa and Pacsa are also working. Currently, they are trying to control the fire with four water jets, which may also affect traffic on roads near Lake Balaton in the coming hours.

Due to the smoke, air quality may deteriorate in the surrounding settlements, including the lakeside holiday resorts, so disaster management recommends that those outdoors close their windows if possible. The work of the firefighters is assisted by local agricultural machinery to gain faster access to the burning area.
