Cherry-sized hail batters Balaton ⛈️
Today lively thunderstorm activity also took place along the southern shore of Lake Balaton, one cell of which grew a spectacular anvil cloud moving southward and unleashed cherry-sized hailstones near Nagyszokoly. Although the hail did not directly affect the lakeside settlements, the storm’s formation and intensification remained closely tied to the Balaton region.
In the late afternoon hours the cell that strengthened south of Balaton first brought refreshing showers to the areas around the lake, which was welcome for holidaymakers and locals alike after the heat. In this part of Transdanubia, however, the precipitation quickly turned into intense hail, which may have caused minor to moderate damage in gardens and vegetable plots.
At the Balaton beaches and marinas the storm’s passage briefly suspended swimming, yet many were able to admire the mammatus clouds outlined on the horizon and the rainbows that appeared after the storm. The residents of the southern Transdanubian villages closest to Balaton least expected the sudden hailstones, so the natural phenomenon once again reminded everyone how quickly the weather can change around the lake.
Today’s events clearly show that the Balaton region deserves special attention not only for its summer warmth but also for its changeable, sometimes severe thunderstorms. 🌩️
