Former Fonyód Mayor: Can He Remain Behind Bars? 🔒
Fonyód, one of the most popular resort towns on the southern shore of Lake Balaton, has once again come into the spotlight: due to ongoing criminal proceedings against former mayor József Hidvégi and his associates, the Kaposvár District Court has extended the pre-trial detention. The news directly affects the local community and those vacationers who have trusted in the maintenance of the town's green areas for years.
According to suspicions, between 2019 and 2023, sham contracts concluded by the Fonyód City Development and City Management Nonprofit Kft. caused approximately 102 million forints in financial damage. The former mayor countersigned the transactions related to green space management and area planning, while the authorities had already been investigating the company's operations earlier. The prosecutor's office maintains that the general and specific grounds against the suspects still exist, therefore extending the detention is justified.
In the Lake Balaton coastal settlements, it is always of particular importance how local municipal companies manage common resources. In the case of Fonyód, the condition of green areas is decisive not only for residents but also for the thousands arriving during the summer season – the upkeep of promenades, parks and public spaces leading to the beaches fundamentally influences the town's image. The proceedings now affect the entire operation of the city development Kft., which may also impact the tourist appeal in the long term.
For locals, the most important question now is what lessons the city leadership will draw once the investigation concludes, and how they will restore public trust. In the settlements around Lake Balaton, transparent management is not only a legal but also a community issue.
