Why does Lake Balaton recede by 1 cm daily? π
The water level of Lake Balaton has been decreasing at a surprising rate in recent days: nearly one centimeter per day, even though the weather is already much milder than the previous heatwave. This process directly affects the lakeside settlements, beaches, and water sports alike.
During the heat dome, the surface of Lake Balaton heated up extremely, while a moisture-rich layer formed in the air. This βmoisture domeβ and the weak wind together moderated evaporation. However, the current stronger air movement continuously carries away the water vapor, making evaporation more intense β even despite the lower water temperature.
On the southern shore the change is particularly noticeable: in the shallower areas, the water's retreat is visible sooner, which may also affect the mooring of smaller boats and anglers near the reeds. Locals are already talking about having to pay attention to the draft of watercraft earlier than usual.
From the perspective of lakeside tourism, the process also matters: if the water level continues to recede, the sandy parts of the beaches may widen, but at the same time, the entrances and areas around the piers become shallower. π So despite the mild weather, Lake Balaton still holds surprises for vacationers and locals alike.
