Fonyód: Why was the former mayor's detention extended?

Fonyód, one of the most popular settlements on the southern shore of Lake Balaton, is going through a serious ordeal: the detention of the town's former Fidesz mayor and his associate has been extended, affecting both the local community and holidaymakers. According to the decision of the Kaposvár District Court, the risk of obstructing the proceedings and recidivism still exists, so the coercive measure lasts until October 17.

According to the suspicion, between 2019 and 2023 the former municipal leader and the former head of the municipal asset management company caused a property disadvantage of 102 million forints to a municipal Kft. through fictitious contracts. The mayor countersigned the agreements on green area management and land development, while the work was actually carried out by the municipality's own staff or other contractors. Among the contracting parties were companies close to the former leader, including a company run by his son.

This development particularly affects Balaton tourism, as the condition of Fonyód's green areas directly influences the attractiveness of the beaches and the experience of holidaymakers 🏖️.
