Storm reaches Balaton: trees falling 🌪️

BalatonLife

On Sunday afternoon the storm finally reached the Balaton region as well, and strong winds forecast by meteorologists became noticeable on the southern shore. The first reports to disaster management arrived mainly from Somogy County and the southern shore of Lake Balaton, where gusts knocked trees onto roads and buildings.

For locals and weekend visitors this means traffic is disrupted in several settlements. Broken branches and fallen trees block roads, while walking along the lakeside promenades and near beaches can also be dangerous. The wind has also torn down power and telecommunications lines, so temporary power outages are expected in some Balaton resort areas.

The stormy weather particularly affects water sports enthusiasts. Dangerous waves can form on Lake Balaton within moments, so boat and yacht rentals were suspended early in the afternoon at harbours and beach rental spots. The most important advice for holidaymakers now is to avoid staying near trees and to follow local municipal updates.

Disaster management continues to receive reports, and several fire brigade units are working on damage clearance along the southern shore. Although the storm is short-lived, caution is still advised around Balaton in the coming hours 🌬️⚡.
