Shock in Balatonboglár: 12-year-old hits woman with scooter ⚡

BalatonLife

The accident occurred on the Platán strand promenade in Balatonboglár on Saturday evening, when a 12-year-old boy on an electric scooter collided with a female pedestrian. The location is one of the busiest lakeside promenades around Balaton, where holidaymakers and locals alike stroll in the evenings, so the incident immediately highlights the importance of traffic safety along the lakeshore.

According to data from the Somogy County Police, the boy was riding an iSinwheel D1 scooter without a helmet at high speed at 10:05 p.m. He hit the woman walking in front of him, who suffered serious injuries, while the minor was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Paramedics treated both.

In Balaton-side settlements electric scooters are an increasingly common sight, especially during the summer season. However, promenades such as the area around Platán strand in Boglár are not racetracks: pedestrians, cyclists and families share the narrow space. The police therefore emphasise that a scooter is a vehicle, not a toy – it is forbidden to use one without knowledge of the traffic rules.

The authorities stressed: parents should not allow underage children to operate high-performance scooters if they are not familiar with basic traffic rules. It is also strictly forbidden to consume alcohol while riding a scooter, and listening to music or using a phone while riding is life-threatening. ⚠️

The accident highlights that safety on the promenades around Balaton is everyone’s shared responsibility. Wearing a brightly coloured helmet and protective gear not only makes you visible but also significantly reduces the risk of serious injury in the event of a collision.
