The Sió gets life-saving water from Lake Balaton 🌊

The water of Lake Balaton plays a key role every summer in keeping the water of the Sió Channel fresh and pleasant in the inner area of Siófok. For the current refresh, only 150,000 cubic meters of water are released from the lake, which is significantly less than in previous years – thus practically not affecting the water level of Lake Balaton at all.

Due to the heatwave, the water quality often deteriorates along the 2-kilometer downtown section of Siófok, and unpleasant odors and discoloration may occur. Therefore, the General Directorate of Water Management includes this short-term water exchange in the operating schedule every year. During the current operation, only half the amount is used compared to before, so the lake's water reserves are used even more sparingly.

It is important to emphasize: this is not a release of Balaton water. The lake's water level can evaporate up to 1 cm on a warmer day, while the current refresh means only a 0.25 mm decrease – an imperceptible amount for bathers and sailors.

For residents and holidaymakers along the Siófok shoreline, however, it is good news that the channel water will thus become clean and odor-free again, improving the atmosphere of the downtown promenade and nearby beaches as well. 🌊 Lake Balaton is once again “helping” without losing anything.
