Balaton Crossing: Another Week Full of Excitement 🏊
The largest traditional mass event on Lake Balaton, the crossing swim, is postponed again: the organizers have delayed the event to August 1st, that is, next Saturday. The decision is based on the forecast from the HungaroMet observatory in Siófok, which was also approved by the Balaton Water Police.
The originally planned 44th Balaton Crossing for this weekend will thus take place one week later, on August 1, provided that meteorological conditions improve by then. The lakeside towns have been preparing for weeks to welcome thousands of participants and accompanying family members.
The postponement directly affects tourism around Lake Balaton: many have already booked accommodations near Siófok, Balatonfüred or Keszthely, and restaurateurs were also counting on the extra traffic. For locals, the crossing is always a special day when the lakeside promenades fill up and beach traffic increases significantly.
The decision due to the weather is understandable from a safety perspective – the stormy waves of Lake Balaton can pose a serious risk to open-water swimmers. The organizers hope that more stable conditions will develop over the lake next week.
Locals and returning vacationers are now wondering how the long weekend program will unfold. While the postponement brings some disappointment, it gives many the opportunity to enjoy the Balaton summer for one more week 🌊🏊♂️.
