Cellar in Flames Near Somogysámson – What Happened? 🔥

Flames broke out in a thirty-square-meter cellar and the forest undergrowth in the area of Somogysámson near the southern shore of Lake Balaton. The fire quickly caught the attention of local communities, as the forest strips near Marcali are among the favorite routes for many Balaton hikers and anglers during the summer months.

The professional firefighters from Marcali and the volunteers from Szőkedencs extinguished the fire with three water jets. The effectiveness of the intervention shows that the units operating in the area are prepared for such events, which may occur more frequently in the hilly region around Lake Balaton during dry periods.

After extinguishing the fire, the units began post-intervention work to prevent re-ignition. This rapid response is particularly important for locals, as residents and holidaymakers from the surrounding settlements – including the lakeside resorts along the Balaton – are sensitive to forest fires, whose smoke can be noticeable from a distance.

Although the fire remained modest in size, it serves as a reminder that protecting the forests around Lake Balaton requires constant attention.
