Is the water disappearing from Tihany's Inner Lake? 🌊
One of the special small reservoirs of the Balaton Uplands, the Tihany Inner Lake has undergone a spectacular change in recent weeks. Due to the persistent drought and lack of precipitation, the lake's water mass has significantly decreased, so the water surface has drastically receded and a large part of the bed has dried out.
Along the shore, wide whitish-gray cracked mud strips have been exposed, and in places remnants of old stone wells and artificial structures have emerged. Although the dried bed looks like solid ground, according to the Balaton Uplands National Park the mud has a high clay content, is wet and deeply sinking, so approaching the shoreline is still not recommended and poses a risk of accidents ☀️.
The phenomenon clearly shows how sensitive the balance of small waters around Balaton is to longer dry periods. The weekend will still be hot, but on Monday a cold front arrives with showers and thunderstorms – however, widespread soaking rain is not expected this time either.
