Balatonakali Fish Day: Taste the Flavors of the Lake! 🐟

Balatonakali, one of the popular small settlements in the eastern basin of Lake Balaton, had to cancel one of its most popular autumn events this year. The Fish Day and the associated Búcsú fishing competition could not have been held on September 12, 2026, due to persistently extreme weather, extraordinary heat, and the lake's record low water level.

The decision is understandable yet painful for the local community and returning visitors. Balatonakali's shoreline has particularly suffered from the drought in recent months: the shallow water has not only made fishing more difficult but has also affected the usability of harbors and beaches. Such traditional events have always provided an opportunity for locals and visitors from surrounding settlements to celebrate together the connection between fishing and Lake Balaton.

According to the organizers' statement, the circumstances meant they were no longer able to hold the event safely and appropriately this year. The low water level of Lake Balaton and the persistent heat would have posed risks both to participants and to the lake's wildlife.

Although the cancellation of Fish Day leaves the village square and shoreline areas empty this year, the community is already preparing for a return next year. For the settlements around Lake Balaton, such programs represent not only entertainment but also important moments for local identity and tourism. We hope that in 2027 we can celebrate together again on the lakeshore 🌊.
