Moonbow flashed over Lake Balaton with the full moon 🌕

An unforgettable dawn greeted us in the Balaton region: the light of the full moon drew a rare moonbow in the sky, while showers and thunderstorms passed over the lake. 🌕

The special atmospheric phenomenon formed around five o’clock in the morning, when cells arriving from the western border reached Lake Balaton. The moonlight refracted on the water droplets created the arc, which often appears to the human eye merely as a whitish fog, yet in long-exposure shots it shines in magical colors.

Our webcams operating on Fonyód-Várhegy and in Balatonmáriafürdő also captured the moment, so locals and lakeside holidaymakers could immortalize this truly rare sight. The storms then moved further east and northeast, but the magical memory remained over Lake Balaton.

Such nights remind us of the special natural treasures the Balaton region bestows upon us when moonlight meets precipitation at just the right angle. 🌈
