Cold Front Drives Away Saharan Dust from Lake Balaton 🌬️

The change was also felt in the Lake Balaton region when the cold front finally pushed the dust from the Sahara out of the atmosphere. In recent days, desert dust reached here with southern flows, but the arriving front quickly put an end to this phenomenon.

Around 4 a.m., the first thunderstorms formed in the southwestern border area and directly around Lake Balaton. These cells moved east-northeast, affecting the lake, and brought particularly strong wind gusts in the Fonyód area. According to Időkép measurements, a 102 km/h gust was recorded here, which is already considered storm strength.

In addition to the wind, precipitation also fell, although less rain fell directly on the shores of Lake Balaton than in the areas around Nagykanizsa. There, 10-15 millimeters of rain fell, while on the lake shore the wind dominated. The stormy gusts swept the dust out of the air, improving visibility and making the air quality more favorable in the area.

This front brought some relief to locals and holidaymakers after the humid, dustier weather. A clearer sky is now expected over Lake Balaton, and the wind will soon subside, but many felt the stormy moments along the shore.
