Siófok Honors Mohács 500 with a Kopjafa on the Balaton Shore
One of the most significant settlements on Lake Balaton, Siófok commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács in a special way. The city leadership has decided to erect a kopjafa in memory of the heroes on this day, August 29, 2026, Saturday at 3 p.m., thereby emphasizing the Balaton region's connection to important moments in Hungarian history.
The bells ringing in the churches of the Christian denominations simultaneously evoke the memory of Archbishop and military leader Pál Tomori and the other ecclesiastical dignitaries and heroes who sacrificed their lives. Although Siófok did not yet exist under this name in 1526, the present-day community feels that the Balaton-side settlement also has a role in the remembrance. Dr. Róbert Lengyel mayor emphasized: the city thus connects to the tradition of national mourning and heroic stand.
The erection of the kopjafa, in addition to strengthening local identity, may also increase the tourist appeal of the Balaton region, as this commemoration will also be accessible to visitors. The Balaton-side community thus sends a message not only about the summer season but also about shared historical remembrance 🌊. The event is expected to attract many locals and guests, strengthening the cultural cohesion of the region.
