What awaits you at the hidden sights of a Balaton settlement? 🌊

Balatonakarattya is the northeastern gateway to the lake: those arriving from Budapest first catch a glimpse of the sparkling water surface of Lake Balaton here. From the loess plateau, a stunning panorama opens up to the eastern basin, to the right the mountains of the Balaton Uplands, in the distance the silhouette of the Tihany Peninsula, and on clear days one can see all the way to Badacsony.

The history of the settlement is closely intertwined with the Balaton region. After the Roman era, migrations swept through the shoreline, later Prince Géza donated the surrounding villages to the nuns of the Veszprém Valley. In 1109, King Kálmán’s charter reveals that the area was known as Terra Akaratia, and its inhabitants were court servants. During the Árpád era, several smaller settlements – Máma, Sándor, Csittény – stood around today’s Akarattya, but these were destroyed during the Turkish times.

The village’s name is of Hungarian origin, derived from the word “akarat” (will): according to its meaning, the settlers were exempted from certain services by the king’s will. From 1718, Akarattya major reappears, later under the name Kajarittya, indicating that lakeside life had restarted.

Today, Balatonakarattya is a peaceful starting point for exploring the lake. The shoreline promenades, the views from the heights, and the quiet village atmosphere all prove that the magic of Balaton begins here. 🌊
