They Turned Back in Tihany: Várkonyis Saved a Turtle 🐢
The roads around Lake Balaton always hold surprises, especially during the summer period when traffic is busier between Tihany and the surrounding settlements. On the main roads at such times, not only cars, but also the lakeside wildlife often crosses the road – for example, turtles, which can easily get lost due to the proximity of the waterfront.
Andrea Várkonyi and her husband, Lőrinc Mészáros, were driving in Tihany when they spotted a small turtle in the middle of the busy roadway. The turtle lay confused on the asphalt as cars sped past. Andrea immediately signaled to her husband to turn back and help the distressed animal.
The couple briefly held up traffic to safely move the turtle off the road. Andrea walked with it until she found a suitable spot on the shore of Lake Balaton where the creature could return to the water without wandering back onto the road. The turtle visibly reluctant, but eventually headed toward the waves 🐢.
The incident shows how people living and visiting the Lake Balaton area care for the protection of local nature. Such a small but attentive act can not only save an animal’s life but also set an example for those traveling in the region 🌊.
