Balaton sights you didn't know about in our settlement ✨

Balatonakarattya is the gateway to the northeastern shore of the lake, where guests arriving from Budapest first encounter the sparkling water surface of Balaton. From the road or train climbing the loess ridge, a stunning panorama unfolds: to the right the mountains of the Balaton Uplands, in the distance the grayish heights of the Tihany Peninsula, and on clear days you can even see as far as Badacsony.

The settlement has about a thousand inhabitants, and several villages already stood in the area during the Árpád era. After the Romans, Huns, Goths and Avars left traces in the region, while Prince Géza around 990 donated the surrounding areas to the Veszprém Valley nunnery. A charter from the time of King Kálmán first mentions the lands as Terra Akaratia, where the court servants lived.

During the Turkish times the small village was destroyed, but in 1718 it reappears as Akarattya major. The name of the settlement is of Hungarian origin, derived from the word “akarat” (will), referring to the fact that the settlers were exempt from certain services by the king’s will.

Today Balatonakarattya is a perfect starting point for exploring the eastern basin, where the 23-kilometre-long water surface and the view of the Somogy hills impress everyone. 🏞️
