What attracts the crowds to Lake Balaton? Not the water level! 🌊

The tourism of Lake Balaton attracts thousands of visitors year after year to the surrounding settlements, where the operation of local hospitality and accommodation establishments largely relies on the lake's appeal. However, according to researchers Gábor Ungvári and Gábor Horváth, the assumption that the water level alone determines how many people come to vacation at the lake is incorrect.

The experts point out: as long as Lake Balaton retains its character as a bathing lake, changes in water level only moderately influence visitor traffic. According to their econometric models, the impact begins to be noticeable below approximately 60-70 centimeters of water level – every additional centimeter of decrease below this threshold already noticeably reduces tourism.

However, climate change brings new challenges. If extremely low water levels become more frequent, it could negatively affect not only the lake's direct appeal but also the broader economic environment of Lake Balaton. The researchers believe it is worth discussing now how to adapt – and solutions are not expected solely from the state.

They consider a possible water replenishment investment more as a kind of "insurance," in which property owners and local entrepreneurs must also take an active role in financing. This approach allows the communities around Lake Balaton to preserve their revenues from tourism in the long term 🌊.
