Balaton: Why has the number of foreign guests decreased? 🌊

Balaton tourism has once again proven its resilience this summer, despite a decrease in the number of foreign guests compared to last year. Hungarian visitors partially compensated for the missing foreigners at the region's accommodations, so the traffic at the lakeside resorts did not decline significantly.

According to KSH data, in July 1.8 percent more Hungarian guests were registered at Balaton than a year earlier. This increase is particularly important for smaller guesthouses, campsites and catering establishments around the lake, where domestic tourists represent a stable source of revenue during the peak season. The number of guests also rose nationally at commercial accommodations, but in the case of Balaton this reflects the strengthening of local Hungarian traffic.

Interestingly, fewer guests were received at private and other accommodations, indicating that visitors to Balaton preferred traditional hotels and apartment houses. Lakeside service providers can nevertheless remain optimistic, as the shorter but frequent visits of domestic tourists helped maintain traffic 🌊.

This trend carries a positive message for local businesses: Balaton remains an attractive destination for Hungarian families and groups of friends, who gladly return for the waterfront programs and nearby attractions. The absence of foreign guests, however, highlights that in the coming period it may be worth marketing the region even more strongly on the domestic market.
