Is the Balaton Bike Loop Collapsing at Fonyód? Cyclists' Shocking Opinion
The Balaton Cycling Loop is becoming increasingly popular among cyclists seeking safe and enjoyable tours on the roads around the lake. However, this year's survey has highlighted that serious quality issues still hinder travel on the western and northern shores.
According to a survey by the Hungarian Cyclists' Club, Fonyód received the lowest rating with only 3.50 points out of ten. The situation is not much better in neighboring settlements either: Zánka scored 3.58, Balatonakali 3.69, Révfülöp 3.90 and Balatonszepezd 3.97. These consecutive sections together indicate problems affecting a continuous stretch of several kilometers.
Cyclists most frequently mentioned uneven pavement, missing or narrow bike paths, and the dangers of busy road sections. This is especially problematic during the summer months when many families and groups travel around the lake 🚴♂️.
The poor-quality sections not only discourage tourists but also hinder the daily commuting of local residents. For those living on the northern shore of Balaton, the cycling loop would be an important alternative to driving, but due to the current conditions many are giving up cycling altogether.
At the same time, the survey also showed that where developments have been completed, satisfaction has improved significantly. This suggests that targeted investments could make the entire loop more attractive across the entire Balaton region.
