Secrets of the Balaton Bolygó: What Does 100 Years Hide? 🌊

The sailboat named Bolygó occupies a special place on the waters of Balaton, celebrating its hundredth anniversary this year. For sailors and locals living around the lake, this boat is not merely an old piece, but a living part of the Balaton heritage that preserves sailing traditions across generations.

Many people on the Balaton Uplands and in the lakeside settlements know the Bolygó, which has actively plied the lake in recent decades as well. Eszter Fináczy, who has cared for the boat since the 1970s, put it this way in her greeting: “It is often mentioned that when I got to know it, when I first met it – but I cannot recall that, because it has always been part of my life, for as long as I can remember.” This personal bond shows how the life of such a boat is intertwined with the daily life of the Balaton community.

The presence of the hundred-year-old sailboat on the lake reminds us of Balaton’s rich maritime past. Locals take pride that such rare, venerable pieces are still in use today and contribute to the region’s tourist appeal.
