The Future of Balaton: Can Science Save the Region? 🌊

The future of the Balaton region increasingly depends on knowledge- and science-based approaches. Sustainable regional development is crucial not only from an environmental perspective, but also economically and socially for the lakeside settlements.

More than a hundred municipal leaders, researchers, university experts and development policy specialists recently gathered in Balatonalmádi to discuss the foundations of the initiative called “The Future of Balaton”. The focus of the event was knowledge-based, sustainable settlement development in the Balaton Priority Holiday Area 🌊.

The participants emphasized that local decision-makers need to cooperate more closely with research institutes and universities. This enables the lakeside settlements of Balaton to preserve their natural values in the long term, while remaining attractive to both visitors and locals.

As a result of the conference, concrete proposals are expected to be incorporated into regional strategies that can directly help Balaton municipalities in planning and implementing sustainable investments. This change in approach is particularly important for the future of the lake.
