Would Greens Halt Fonyódi Balaton Shore Construction? 🛑

The protection of the Balaton shoreline has once again become a central issue: due to the apartment building construction on the Fonyód shore section, the Hungarian Nature Conservation Association and the Clean Air Working Group have also taken action. Together with the civilians, they are asking the Balaton Development Council to initiate an extraordinary review of the permits at its Friday meeting, and if necessary, suspend the construction for the duration of the investigations.

On the area previously known as a free beach, Cordia is erecting a 99-unit, four-story building. In recent months, trees have been cut down, terrain leveling has begun, and foundation work is already underway on the filled shore. Although the investment has received all necessary permits, the position of the Balaton Limnological Research Institute has put the issue in a new light.

According to the researchers, the mouth of the Pogányvölgyi stream is one of the last natural "gates" of Lake Balaton, playing a key role in the lake's water quality and ecological stability. The lake is already at the limit of its ecological carrying capacity, so interventions must be judged based on broader considerations affecting the entire lake.

Thus, the Fonyód investment is not merely a local matter: the loss of shoreline habitats could in the long term also worsen the condition of the entire Balaton. According to the nature conservationists, in light of the new scientific data, it is necessary to reconsider whether the previous permits are sufficient for the protection of the lake. 🌊
