Balaton Turnaround: After 30 Degrees, Frost? ❄️
On the shores of Lake Balaton, even on Sunday a true late-summer atmosphere prevails: the water temperature is pleasantly warm, and the beaches and harbors fill with swimmers and sailors. In just a day and a half, however, a drastic change arrives, and the region could shift from around 30 degrees of heat to ground frost.
On Sunday afternoon, maximum temperatures of 26–29 °C are still expected around Balaton, so many will enjoy the day outdoors. Late in the evening, though, a strong cold front arrives from the north, bringing significantly cooler air to the lake area. After the front passes, Monday will already see daytime temperatures 5–10 degrees lower.
The greatest cooling will be felt during the night and early morning in the lakeside areas and the slightly more distant valleys. Ground frost is not ruled out, especially affecting the lower-lying parts of the Balaton-felvidék and the vineyards. Although the lake’s water temperature cools more slowly, the air already feels cooler because of the onshore winds.
Because of the sudden change, it is worth preparing for Monday’s plans: warmer layers are recommended for morning sailing or hiking, and gardeners should also watch the early-morning temperatures. Thus, in a single day the Balaton region bids farewell to summer-like weather and steps into true autumn.
