Balaton Windstorm: Dust Cloud Covers the Shore 🌬️

The Balaton region was also thoroughly affected by the cold front that arrived overnight, which woke many people from their sleep with gusty winds. The wind was particularly strong around the lake: 95 km/h in Keszthely, while our high-altitude measuring station in Fonyód registered a 100 km/h gust.

Following the front, the wind will remain stormy at Balaton today and tomorrow as well. The air movement stirred up dust storms in several places on the dry soil, thus reducing visibility on the lakeside promenades and surrounding roads. Although the amount of precipitation fell short of expectations – only a few drops fell overnight, measurable rain barely fell –, the force of the wind still left a noticeable mark on the region.

Behind the front, the sky quickly cleared, so the morning started with sunny weather in the Balaton settlements. However, the summer warmth has disappeared, replaced by cooler, windy weather characterizing the days. Strong wave action has developed on the lake's water, so increased caution is recommended for boaters and water sports enthusiasts.

In the coming hours, lively, locally stormy gusts are also to be expected around Balaton, but no significant rain is expected further. From the cumulus clouds, at most scattered showers may form, mainly in the eastern basin area. 🌬️
