Balatonkenese flooded: what's next? 🌧️
Among the Balaton shoreline settlements, Balatonkenese received the most precipitation during Saturday’s stormy weather. In the town near the lake’s eastern basin, 43 millimeters of rain fell within 24 hours, an unusually large amount for the region.
According to Hungaromet measurements, this rainfall arrived in a single day, while significant precipitation also occurred elsewhere around Lake Balaton. In Keszthely, for example, 42.6 millimeters were recorded, thoroughly watering the western basin’s shoreline as well.
Such intense downpours can quickly fill smaller watercourses flowing into the Balaton and cause temporary flooding on local roads. Residents and weekend visitors around the lake were surprised by the sudden rain, especially in suburban areas where the soil was already saturated from previous days’ weather.
For Balatonkenese residents, this volume means it is advisable to check basement rooms and rainwater drainage systems in the coming days. Soil saturation was also noticeable along the lakeside promenades and near beaches, which may temporarily affect outdoor event planning.
