The Secret of Balaton: Water Level Rose by 2 Centimeters 🌊

BalatonLife

The water level of Lake Balaton rose by only 2 centimeters over the past weekend, thus currently standing at 31 centimeters. Residents of the settlements around the lake and lakeside service providers have long been awaiting favorable changes, but despite significant rainfall, the expected larger jump did not occur.

Over the weekend, 30–40 millimeters of precipitation fell in many places in the Balaton region, exactly where the most rain fell in the country. Locals welcomed the long-awaited rain, which alleviated the drought in the coastal gardens and vineyards.

Why didn't the water level rise more? The answer lies in the soil. After months of drought, the parched earth absorbed the water like a sponge, so much less precipitation reached the lake bed from the catchment areas.

Naturally, every millimeter of rise has a positive effect on the ecological state of Lake Balaton. The slow rise in water level helps the reed beds to regenerate and the fish stock as well, but the current increase is not yet sufficient to meaningfully change the water shortage situation of the past months.

For the lakeside communities, this means that water management must continue to be monitored, especially with the summer season approaching. 💧
