What is now prohibited on the Balaton shore? New restrictions 🌊

Further restrictions are expected in the waterfront areas of Lake Balaton, which will directly affect the construction possibilities of the municipalities around the lake. The government's goal is to limit the developments that were previously permitted by the settlement planning plans, thus protecting the natural shore sections of the lake.

The government decree that came into force last September gave 44 lakeside settlements one year to adjust their local regulations to the new requirements. However, the deadline expired without most municipalities completing the task. Therefore, temporary change bans have been introduced in several places until the exact zoning classifications are finalized.

According to the ministry, the new regulation is stricter than the previous one, especially in preserving existing natural shore sections. This is crucial for Lake Balaton, as excessive development could in the long term impair the water quality of the lake and its tourist appeal as well.

For local residents and property owners, this means that in the future it will be more difficult to obtain permits for waterfront constructions. At the same time, the tightening creates an opportunity for the Balaton area to preserve its green character, and for visitors to continue enjoying the less built-up, nature-close shores 🌊.
