Tragedy at Lake Balaton: woman falls into well while trimming hedge

BalatonLife

The tragedy occurred in a garden in Balatonendréd over the weekend, where a 44-year-old local woman fell into a poorly covered, disused well while trimming the hedge. The accident once again draws attention to the hidden dangers of older properties in Lake Balaton coastal settlements, which are everyday occurrences for many holidaymakers and locals alike.

The woman was working in the yard when the ground suddenly gave way beneath her. Paramedics and police officers who arrived were unable to help – she lost her life at the scene. The Somogy Vármegyei Rendőr-főkapitányság is investigating the circumstances of the incident in administrative proceedings; foul play has been ruled out.

Balatonendréd is one of the smaller settlements on the southern shore, home to numerous old houses and gardens, often with disused wells or old structures. These invisible dangers can pose particular risks during the summer season, when many people come to the lake to relax or maintain their properties.

To prevent similar accidents, it is advisable to regularly inspect gardens, especially at older houses. Such tragedies always deeply affect the local communities around Lake Balaton, as they can change a family’s life in an instant. ⚠️
