Downbursts Sweep Over Balaton in the Storm ⚡

BalatonLife

On Wednesday afternoon, the storm reached the western basin of Balaton suddenly and spectacularly, passing through the Keszthely area with particularly strong downbursts and stormy wind gusts. For holidaymakers and locals, this rapid weather change was a vivid reminder of how unpredictable the lake’s weather can be during the summer season.

The strongest wind gusts approached 80 km/h, posing a serious challenge for those on the water. In Balaton-side settlements, including Keszthely and nearby beaches, many quickly packed up their belongings as the wind suddenly picked up and whitecaps appeared on the water surface. In Hévíz more than 20 mm of precipitation fell in a short time, while hail was also reported from Balatonmáriafürdő ⛈️.

As a result of the downbursts, ditches filled up in the Zala County area, including around Alsópáhok, and several trees were uprooted or snapped by the strong wind gusts. The effects were also felt on the western shore of Balaton: minor damage occurred along the waterfront promenades and in the harbours, and temporary restrictions were introduced during the boating season.

For locals and holidaymakers alike, such storms always serve as a warning: it is advisable to monitor forecasts, especially if planning to go out on the water or spend a longer time at the beach. Besides Balaton’s beauty, these rapid weather fronts are also part of the lake’s charm – provided one is prepared for them in time.
