Balaton Drama: Water Police Save 133 People This Year

On Lake Balaton this year, serious efforts are being made to ensure the safety of bathers: the water police have already been called out 76 times and have saved a total of 133 lives during the summer season. This number shows well that often multiple people get into trouble at the same time on the lake shore, whether group hikers or family beach outings. According to the Somogy County Police Headquarters, the Balaton water police supervise the 600 square kilometer lake through five stations, with more than twenty-five boats and in cooperation with four water rescue associations. The protection of the 145 designated bathing places and the 235 km long shoreline is particularly important during the peak season, when the surrounding settlements – from Siófok to Keszthely – welcome thousands of guests. The experts emphasize, that most accidents could be prevented by following a few simple rules. It is advisable to check the bed conditions in advance, avoid alcohol consumption before entering the water, and in extreme heat one should not jump suddenly into the lake. For those who cannot swim, wearing a life jacket is considered mandatory, while weaker swimmers should bathe calmly only in the shallow areas. From the perspective of local tourism, these rescues not only save human lives but also strengthen the image of Lake Balaton.
